our compass luminary

plant collaborators: sulfur cosmos, cutch extract, marigold

Compass plant (silphium laciniatum), the giraffe of the prairie savanna, the blazing candle outcrying big bluestem. These long-stemmed, sun-seeking magnificents are commonly called compass plant because their flat, seaweed-lookin’ leaves point north and south, quite reliably. In a dreamy moment, I saw the compass flower floating like a tapered candle in the transition of flickering color on this quilt; adding luminescence to defer the dark contours of approaching night. It’s a darkening time, to be sure, so may we call upon our luminaries.
